Story

I'm running the TCS London Marathon for Dementia UK. Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Their nurses, called Admiral Nurses, provide life-changing care to families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimers disease. They help people with dementia stay independent for longer, and support the people caring for them so they have the strength to cope with the bad days, and the energy to enjoy the good days. They have the time to listen and the knowledge to solve problems, helping families take back control when they are struggling.

Sadly in March of this year, I lost my Father, Alan, to dementia related illness. He had been struggling for some time, but we hold on to the fact that even shortly before he passed away, he was still able to enjoy time with his beloved garden and animals.

It is through this personal experience, and that of professional life, seeing and supporting dementia patients and their families, and working alongside the nursing teams at Astell House and St Faith’s Nursing Home in Cheltenham, that I cannot overstate the vital role of the Dementia UK Nurses.

Some people will know I’m not a runner, so the ‘couch to marathon’ programme I’m facing should at least provide some entertainment. I’m hoping to raise at least £2,500 in support of this wonderful charity. I’m grateful for any donations, big or small, so please get involved, get donating and wish me luck!
