Countess Autumn Walk for Wards · 14 October 2018

The Countess Charity works with the local community to raise money for over 80 funds across the hospital - each one making a real difference to patient care!

Story

I was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome on 23rd May 2018.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare but serious autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks healthy nerve cells in your peripheral nervous system. This leads to weakness, numbness, and tingling. It can eventually cause paralysis.

I quickly accepted that I was going on a journey in my life that was going to be testing for me, but I always stayed positive.

Within 3 days of being in the Countess hospital I was admitted to ICU where I was to spend the next 47 days, most of which I had to spend on a ventilator, but I was seen regularly by the neuro and physio teams who did great work with me whilst I was unable to move from my bed in the early stages of my illness.

When I moved to ward 49 at the Countess of Chester I started daily sessions with the Neuro team as I started to make a recovery on my mobility. Working very closely with the whole neuro & physio teams (Loz, Kath, Robin and Lauren), they all did a professional & fantastic job with planning and arranging suitable sessions, to help me get back on my feet something which they did before I moved to Clatterbridge rehab unit.

I was determined to get back on my feet and I have remained positive to do this, I feel sure that it was a team effort for this to happen and I want to thank all the teams at Countess of Chester hospital ICU nursing staff, ICU’s P/T and O/T teams, Neuro P/T and O/T teams. They all deserve praise and credit for the fantastic job they all do.

On Sunday 14th October myself and Denise will be doing Walk for Wards a 6Km walk to raise funds for the Therapy teams at Countess of Chester to help buy new equipment to help future patients in rehabilitation.

We would be truly grateful for any amount donated, no matter how big or small and we’ll take great joy in WALKING this for what we see as a great cause

Update on myself

On Wednesday 8th August I moved to Clatterbridge Rehab Centre where I was to spend another 20 days of Therapy, I was discharged from Clatterbridge on Tuesday 28th August and I'm currently now back at home carrying on with my recovery using the Gym at Chester University.
