Story
On the 13th October 2016 I am going to ditch every comfort I know to climb the summit of the worlds highest free standing mountain.
I will attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and raise £3000 for UNICEF and I need your help to do this.
Here is my story.
In May 2008 my 2 amazing daughters were born, Saskia and Tegan. Tegan almost didn’t make it through. She required resuscitation at birth and for her first few years of life spent several weeks in a NICU incubator which is a pretty scary and heart breaking experience as a parent.
What saved her life was a few things. That she was born in a country without war, into a family who could care for her. She was looked after
by our wonderful NHS with great doctors and nurses and equipment and procedures. She had a primary care system where she could go to for immunizations and regular check ups. She could grow strong both physically through clean water and a healthy diet as well as mentally through our great education system and community.
These were the basic things that made a difference to her living or dying. Basic things that many kids just don’t have. Today Tegan is a
bright, happy, healthy and normal 8 year old kid (check out her pic on my Just Giving page). Unfortunately, in too many countries around the world, the odds for Tegan would have stacked up against her. Twins are already 5 times more likely to die in their first year of life than single babies without violence, disease, war or hunger. With your help I want to try and help some of these kids.
We live in a dangerous world where millions of children are suffering and dying unnecessarily. This is wrong and it has to change. UNICEF focus on five big dangers children face in the world today:
Violence, exploitation and abuse/ Disease/ Hunger and
malnutrition/ War and conflict/ Disaster
Increasingly conflicts are not between States, but within them. Rather than being set-piece battles between contending armies, these are much more complex affairs—struggles between the military and civilians, or between armed civilians, where most often children end up the casualty.
In the past 8 years since Tegan was born these are the statistics on child victims: 2 million killed; 4-5 million disabled; 12 million left homeless; more than 1 million orphaned or separated from their parents; some 10 million psychologically traumatized. Everyone of them is a child like Tegan but was just dealt a worse card.
UNICEF can reach these children with our help.
Even if its only a pound or a second you can spare. Please spare it
and please reach. The bigger the donation the better. Sponsor me and and
join in our mission to reach every child in danger. I am doing this trek in
October 2016 (at my own expense, £2k!). Obviously donations are
pretty crucial to this being a success so any and all support would be
absolutely amazing. Every penny you donate will go directly to UNICEF. I
am eternally grateful to you for your time, your money, your generosity
and your compassion.
I come from a country that doesn’t even have any mountains but if I make it to the summit I promise will plant a flag from your country!
Luv M xx
