Hi and thanks for visiting this Just Giving page and reading this..
I set up the page partly to make it easier for some people to donate and because last year one person found it to be very effective. Sponsorship will also come by various other routes as in the last two years – so this total will be for all the people that walk (not just me) and if met will not necessarily be shown here on Just Giving. I should also point out that in order to increase participation I have always been happy for people to raise money for their own favoured charities, or maybe to go 50/50 with ‘their’ charity and MAP.. HOWEVER, as we can’t split sponsorship raised here on Just Giving, all the money that is donated via this page will go to MAP.
A little history.. I’ve walked the Fairfield Horseshoe many times as it’s a walk I love. I then did it at night, at full moon and it was after that I thought we could do it as a sponsored walk. The first year, 2016, seven people took part and we were pleased to raise over £1,600. Last year, with just nine people, we raised an amazing £2,600 – including, via Just Giving, about £1,100 to MSF (www.msf.org.uk). Hence the target this year of £3,000 – because it’s the third year. But I should stress this is just a target and that any figure we reach is worth the effort.
The walk may sound unchallenging at only ten miles but it’s three to four miles ascending steeply to 2,870 feet and the descent crosses several areas of ankle threatening boulder and all this by the light of the moon – IF the sky is clear. Last year, despite a lovely sunny daytime, when we reached the top we could barely see the ground in front of us; one person was very ill and nearly landed head first when they tripped in the cairn/shelter at the top and suddenly the famous unpredictability of the Lakes weather felt awfully real..! So – no walk in the park but I should also say that it can be quite magical: looking back from such a height at Lake Windermere glimmering in the silvery moonlight; startling high altitude sheep with such a late night appearance and sharing with each other the feeling of audacity evoked by doing, together, such an unorthodox thing. You should consider joining us.. (-:
A little about MAP – or Medical Aid for Palestinians. MAP are a UK registered charity providing both day-to-day health needs for an abused people all the way to the emergency surgical interventions for victims of Israeli Defence Force snipers.. But they also provide a reliable overview of the situation – of which most people know less about than they realise - their website: www.map-uk.org. Please go look for yourself.. and please sponsor us!

If you would like to join the walk, please contact me at speightpaul(at)hotmail.com
