Thank you for taking the time to read this page.
Myself and friend Amy Jones are running in the Bupa Great North Run on 26th May 2013 and below is my story on why we have chosen to do it.
Our world was turned upside down on the 11th April 2011 when my Dad was diagnosed with Mesothelioma. Like most people i had never heard of the word Mesothelioma, now its a word that will haunt me forever.Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is caused from exposure to Asbestos, the cancer is terminal and any treatment given is to try and buy time not a cure . My Dad worked as an Electrician from the age of 16 and was exposed to it in many places from that age until restrictions and bans were introduced in 80's and 90's.
There is a latency period of around 25-40 years which means people do not develop Mesothelioma until all them years after they have been exposed to it. Doctors are expecting many more people to be diagnosed with the disease over the coming years due to the time it was banned and the time it takes to manifest in someones body. For that reason its a rare cancer and is still being researched and drugs still being trialed.
My Dad passed away at the age of 55 leaving behind my mum, sister, brother and granddaughter. He fought hard for 18 months,he fought with dignity and a loving heart and he did that for us,his family. Now i want to do something for him and in his memory. If i can make a difference in a small way then i feel i will make him proud. Therefore i wish to raise as much money as i can for Mesothelioma UK Charitable Trust who provide many services to patients and families effected by the disease. They also raise funds towards the reasearch to find a possible cure for this disease.
My Dad was a truely amazing man and i am honored to have had him in my life.He touched many people's lives and will live on in us all forever. Any donations received will be greatly appreciated.
"This is for you Dad, Love you forever"
