London Bridges Walk 2017 · 2 July 2017 ·

We are the largest charity dedicated to kidney research in the UK. Kidney disease ruins and destroys lives. Treatments are gruelling, relentless. There is no cure. We say this isn't good enough. We will transform kidney health. Kidney disease ends here.

Story

Hi everyone! Thanks for visiting our page. My mum & I are taking part in the London bridges walk for kidney research on 2nd of July. I've picked this charity as its something close to my heart.

After being constantly unwell for well over a year, I was finally diagnosed with IGA nephropathy in May last year. IGA nephropathy is basically when antibodies store in your kidneys and cause scarring and inflammation, effectively resulting in kidney disease. In the past 2 years my kidney function has went from 98% to as low as 32%.

My consultants decided they wanted to try a long course of steroids & mycophenolate and hopefully they would see an improvement in kidney function, but couldn't promise it would make any difference. So over the past 9 months I have been walking about like I've been blown up with a pump, had chicken fillet cheeks as my mum calls them (basically massive swollen cheeks that I could barely open my eyes with lol) swollen hands, knees & feet, along with loads of other side effects that have definitely tried my patience on a daily basis. Hopefully over the next few months I will be back to feeling myself again & my wee kidneys get it together!

Even though it hasn't been the best time of my life, I really couldn't have got through it so far without my consultants who have been amazing from the beginning. I couldn't have asked for any better people to be taking care of me. So that's why ive decided to do this event for kidney research, to try and give something back and raise awareness for kidney disease. My mum is getting dragged along with me as punishment for telling me I have chicken fillet cheeks everytime she sees me 😂
