Event: Global Bird Weekend, from 17 October 2020 to 18 October 2020
The shocking scale of wild bird trade is a tragedy driving many birds to extinction. With your help we can bring an end to illegal and unsustainable wild bird trade practices where we are already working in Asia and soon, in the rest of the world.

Story

Please join and support us in the Global Bird Weekend 17th – 18th October!

The ‘Global Bird Weekend’ has been created by Tim Appleton MBE, co-founder of Birdfair and Naturetrek tour leader, in order to bring global birding communities together for a weekend of united and sponsored bird watching to raise funds for BirdLife's ‘Stop Illegal Bird Trade’ campaign. This vital cause is working to end the threat posed by Asia’s wild bird trade – to both nature and our health. The COVID-19 pandemic is a terrible, but timely, reminder that human health is tightly interlinked with the fate of wild animals trapped, and sold, in trade markets around the world. Birdlife is working to bring an end to illegal and unsustainable wild bird trade practices in Asia. It has the science, the expertise and the local knowledge, but needs financial support to scale up its work to end the wild bird trade once and for all.

We are only too happy to put forward a Naturetrek team to support this event, comprising not only members of our office and UK-based tour leaders, but of our leaders in Colombia, the USA, the Falklands, India, Spain, Australia, Peru, Italy, Argentina and Guyana, who we have rallied to join us in full force! On Saturday 17th October, our team members will be out recording as many bird species as possible on their 'local patches', and loading our combined results to ‘ebird’. We would be so grateful if you would sponsor Team Naturetrek!

This is how your donation could help the project:

£15 provides a day’s worth of fuel to conduct anti-poaching patrols in forests where hunted birds live

£50 supports an ex-trapper to maintain his permaculture plot for a month to generate alternative sustainable income

£100 supports a field team to monitor Helmeted Hornbill populations for a day to ensure they are protected

£200 supports a trained indigenous forest guardian to protect one hornbill or parrot nest for a year

£500 supports a 2-day course to train a forest ranger and patrol staff to identify birds and carry out effective patrols

Please donate now to help us support Birdlife International and end  illegal bird trade!
