Mermaids is a UK charity whose work is all about supporting young trans people so they can become the adults they want to be.

In the UK, transness is a greatly misunderstood way of being. This means children & young people face physical, social & economic barriers to exploring their gender identity & realising their full potential as they become adults. Access to respectful, timely, & quality healthcare for trans youth is lacking in this country meaning trans bodies often have to undergo significantly more physical change than their cis counterparts. Education & support for the families of trans people helps to reduce social exclusion & other harmful impacts of stigma. Improving healthcare & education for trans people & their loved ones is shown to significantly reduce the burden of poor mental health, self harm & suicide among trans communities, having real benefits to people’s quality of life. Work in this area secures a future where trans joy is exciting, proud, & visible; I can’t see any better aim than that.

This is why the amazing work of Mermaids and other LGBTQ+ charities needs funding, & why I have chosen to fund raise for Mermaids as I approach the day of the race in May 2023.
