Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I’m running the Sierra Leone Marathon in aid of Street Child. The Marathon is currently in its third year and is unique as a charity event as it takes place within the communities it is raising money for. The marathon is on May 25 2014 in Makeni, Sierra Leone, and all funds raised go to Street Child.

You've probably heard of Sierra Leone, from 1991 until 2002 it was engaged in a brutal civil war which left over 50,000 people dead. The war ended over 12 years ago now and although the country is totally safe it is going to take a long, long time to recover. Just 5 years ago when the charity Street Child was established Sierra Leone was judged to be the least developed country in the world by the UN Global Development Index.

Now 5 years old Street Child have helped 2,000 children off the streets and provided 20,000 children with the chance to go to school. Street Child works in both urban and rural areas, within local communities, to offer street children support and structure through education and family reunification.

And the race? Well at 6am on Sunday 25th May 2014 I am going to run from Makeni, out into the remote rural villages where Street Child operate to raise as much money as I possibly can. It will be hot, humid and a real challenge but all for a worthy cause!

Where will the money go?

£40 sends a child to school for a year.

£100 starts a business that supports a child and their entire family.

£500 trains and supports a rural teacher for a year.

£1000 pays a social worker to counsel and support 100 street children.

£5000 builds and furnishes a first ever semi-permanent school in a rural village.

Please donate what you can, I’m taking on this challenge for Street Child but together we can make a difference, together we can make an impact on the lives of some of the most vulnerable children in the world.
