Story
Hello my name is Lewis, i am 9 years old and i am trying to raise as much money as i can for the Childrens Hospital at RVI in Newcastle. Me and my Dad will be doing a 9 mile bike ride from Redcar Central to Middlesbrough Train Station at the end of February, depending on our lovely British weather.
I have a genetic disorder called Familial Adenomatous Polyposis, FAP for short. This means people who have FAP can develop polyps on there bowel and if left untreated can turn cancerous. Normally children don't have to be monitored until around 12 years old, unless you have been experiencing symptoms. I have been having some symptoms which led me to have a Colonoscopy and Endoscopy in November 2019. My Mam and Dad were told that more than half of my Colon was covered in polyps, i had biopsies on some of them which came back as 'low risk'. Unfortunately because i have so many they could only test a few, meaning i could still be at risk.
My Surgeon has decided i have to have my Colon removed, this will obviously be a major operation and long stay in hospital. After the operation to allow my body to recover i will have to wear a colostomy bag on my side for 6 weeks, then i will be taken back to theatre to have it removed and fingers crossed i can get back to being the adventurous kid that I am.
