Story

Hello, I am Fudge, a chocolate Labrador who came into the care of Oldies Club, a small volunteer-run charity that rescues and rehomes older dogs in the UK, in June 2016.

**********

Update 7 May 2017 ~ Fudge has now had surgery on his other ear and is doing very well :-). The second ear wasn't as bad as the first and is healing more quickly. We paid a further vet bill of £1419.96 at the end of April, so we have updated the page total we hope to raise.

As you can see from the new photo, Fudge has been playing tug :-) His family tells us that Fudge used to play before, but not for very long at all and he wouldn't have played tug! He's also started inviting another canine member of the family to play with him.

Thank you, so very much, to everyone who had already made a donation. Your support is really appreciated. Fudge's surgery has cost a substantial amount and we're a very small charity - if anyone else would like to contribute, we will be grateful for whatever you can spare.

Update 1 April 2017 ~ Fudge has had his surgery on one ear and is now back at home recovering. The cost for this surgery was £2642.07.  We will update the page when we know when his other ear is to be operated on and we have the final cost. With this most recent bill, we have paid £4,938.89 to date, so all of your lovely donations are very much appreciated, thank you so much :-)

************
Shortly after arriving in Oldies Club foster care, a vet check revealed that I sadly had significant and long-standing ear problems, involving two perforated eardrums and chronic ear disease Initially I had my ears flushed and I was treated with ear drops.

I had my ears flushed again, and samples taken, at the end of February
2017. Unfortunately at the start of March, my vets advised Oldies Club
that my ears were not responding to cleaning and flushing as they had
hoped and that I am now considered to be in a lot of pain with them :-(.  I am now scheduled to have the ear canal ablation on both ears that everyone had hoped could be avoided. I am due to have the operation week  commencing 20 March 2017, which was the soonest the specialist can help  me. The estimate including x-rays and treatment is £4,000 to £4,500 for the whole lot. They won't know until the time of surgery if both ears will be done together or if they feel it better for me to have one done at a time.

My vet bills had already reached £1786.58 up to January 2017, and the treatment at the end of February added a further £510.24 to the total. Even if the scheduled surgery comes in at the lower end of the estimate, that is over £6,000 Oldies Club will have to pay to help me. Given that it is a small charity and I am just one of the dogs it is currently helping, this is a huge amount to cover and so I plead with you to please donate whatever you can spare and to please share my page with any other dog lovers you know, in the hope they will help too. No donation is too small. It all adds up and Oldies Club will be very grateful for your support.

Oldies Club knew that my ear treatment would be ongoing when the issues were first diagnosed and that the cost would discourage potential adopters. On occasion and in such circumstances, Oldies Club provides a supported adoption for a dog and it agreed to cover treatment relating to my ear treatments, with the  adopter covering all other vet bills/costs of keeping a dog. Due to the  financial support, my fosterers and extended family were extremely happy to be in the position to adopt me, so that I could stay within the  family I had become so fond of and familiar with, who had cared for me during my initial veterinary visits. It has however left Oldies Club with rather enormous vet costs to deal with and so I ask anyone who reads this if you would please make a donation and help Oldies Club to help get my ears better?

Thank you so much.

Love, Fudge (and the volunteers at Oldies Club) xxx

Should Oldies Club supporters be generous enough to donate more than is needed for my vet bills/care, any excess money will be directed to the
charity’s general fund and used to help other older dogs in its care.
