Story

Earlier this year, we were devastated by the sudden unexpected passing of a very good friend and one of life's real assets, Sam Little. It is hard to describe just how special Sam was; immensely creative, endlessly inquisitive, adventurous, brave, caring and just a fascinating person to be around. At only 31 years of age, Sam had already achieved and explored more than many might dare to dream possible, yet still had so much left to offer us all.

This October I shall be running the London Marathon in memory of Sam, whilst raising money in support of Cardiac Risk in the Young, a fantastic charity working hard to prevent the frequency of young sudden cardiac death. Working with cardiologists and family doctors to establish good practice, the charity carries out research, provides screening facilities and supports families impacted by such issues.

I was lucky enough to have shared countless amazing memories together with Sam over the years as part of our band, Talons. We started writing music in 2008 and feel immense privilege to have done so, with the multiple records we wrote, released and toured across the UK & Europe together acting as tangible signposts in time. With the six of us all living busy & chaotic lives in different cities (and countries) the band became a singular constant thread weaving through the madness of everything else. Reflecting now, it is often the incidental moments: van journeys, ferry crossings, waiting for soundchecks, losing our minds recording the umpteenth take in a recording studio, that leave lasting impressions and memories of a special relationship between six friends.

Alongside making music, Sam and I also shared a passion studying & working in the field of Architecture. Over the years we would explore architectural curiosities of unfamiliar cities whilst on tour and compare notes on the differing opportunities found working in practice in London vs rural Herefordshire. He took great pleasure in crafting, tinkering and making, processes which manifested themselves in his journey toward becoming an Architect; whilst at London Met he was awarded a Commendation in the prestigious RIBA Bronze Medal awards, and later graduated with Honours from the Architectural Association, where he would subsequently return to teach with his business partner Ryan Cook. In truth it was easy to be in awe of Sam, and so much could be learnt just from being around him.

Sam had an amazing ability to find humour in the absurdity and thrills of life’s quirks, with a unique knack for storytelling and infectious positivity that we will forever miss. His love of life was deeply inspiring and being with Sam you felt anything, no matter how outlandish, could be possible. His infectious laugh and ability to never take things too seriously made him the perfect companion and above all an incredible friend. If you had the pleasure to meet Sam, you will know what an amazing presence he was and why he will always be so sorely missed.

Sam was undoubtedly shaped by his amazing parents Kathy Smith & Stan Little, together with his older brother Joseph. He leaves behind the love of his life, best friend & fiancée Charlotte Bright. Whilst we can’t bring Sam back, by supporting Cardiac Risk in the Young you will help save young lives and loving families from the devastation and loss caused from such potentially fatal cardiac conditions.
