Story

Of the 420 men of 47 RM Commando who set sail from Southampton for Gold Beach in June 1944 only one will return this year.  When I found out years ago that my late Dad had landed at D Day I knew nothing of the Royal Marines.  His surviving comrades from 47 RM Commando adopted me and I travelled with them for 15 years.  Now very few remain, but they built a massive spirit of co-operation with British, French, Dutch, Belgian and German friends to remember what they did and who was killed fighting in France.  On June 6th this year around 100 of us will recreate the march made  behind enemy lines on the same day in 1944.  Serving members of the Royal Marines and international friends will walk the 14 miles from Asnelles to Port en Bessin.  I am hoping for £1 a mile for a maximum contribution of £14 per generous reader to divert to the 47 Veterans via  RMA The Royal Marines Charity.  It offers support to serving, veterans and their families.  Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
