Story
My mum died of cancer in May 2017. St Leonard's Hospice provided wonderful care in the last few weeks of her life meaning she could stay at home.
I, and the rest of my family, were so grateful for this, I wanted to do something to recognise the support and give a little back.
After much deliberation, I decided to run a marathon for charity donations. But as I had never run further than a couple of miles in my life before - and that was 40 years ago - I had a bit of work to do.
Starting with Parkruns, then 10ks and then half marathons, I built up my running abilities. In 2021 I ran the Manchester Marathon and then the Rome Marathon in 2022.
But I wanted a proper challenge for my charity run - one that would test me, generate interest and make my mum proud. The Antarctica Marathon ticked all those boxes.
It is a challenge because of the terrain and weather, but also because I really, really don't like running!
It has been slightly delayed due to Covid, so when I run it on 12th March 2023, I should also be able to celebrate the 51st consecutive month that I have run a half marathon or further.
I hope you never have to be supported by St Leonard's Hospice, but lots of people are and will need to be in the future. If you are able to sponsor me with whatever you are able, and so motivate me and support St Leonard's, I will be very grateful.
Thank you,
Paul
