Story
I live in the beautiful Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. After reading about Ranulph Fiennes, the explorer, competing in the Marathon Des Sables, I decided this was definitely a challenge I wanted to attempt.
The Marathon Des Sables, described by Discovery Channel as the world's toughest foot race, is a five day, multi stage event running 156 miles (250km) through the Sahara desert carrying everything you need with you except water and a tent. Most stages average about 36km/day, but on one day the distance is 91km, which is over 2 marathons. Coupled with temperatures of 40 degrees C, this event is indeed a real challenge.
Once I had decided to compete in the race. I wanted to make the most of the opportunity. Therefore, it was important for me to try to raise money for a charity.
After looking at some charities connected with the race, I decided to raise money for MENCAP, the learning disability charity and run as part of their team for the event. I have been aware of MENCAP's work for many years and I know they provide vital support to many people.
