When the kids were young we had a holiday in North Wales. Taking the train up Snowdon is expensive, so I got up early one morning and had a ride before they woke. I'm not sure Gareth ever forgave me. A few years later he was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy and had a heart transplant at Great Ormond Street in 2004. That gave him another 9 years of life - we saw him get a degree, a car, a home, and drive trains on the South Tynedale Railway.
