I will be leading a team of 10 volunteers, who come of a mixed background from around the UK. All are 18-25 in age, and share a passion for improving the lives of other young people worldwide.
We will be based in Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone, and our role will be focused in four of the major slums around the city. The charity we are working through is Y-Care International, part of the YMCA network, and as such, we will be working closely with them in-country. There is, however, no exclusivity in terms of the religion of those we will be helping, nor is it a requirement that we ourselves are of a certain religion.
There
are 2 main project goals: 1.Health work- HIV/Sanitation education,
especially with youth and at-risk peoples (sex workers) 2. Advocacy -
Working to create and strengthen youth groups to better
lobby for change/help/support from their own community/government, as
well as NGOs. Both programs are already underway, and will continue
after we have gone. The role of my team is to inject some new ideas and
energy. We are not simply turning up, digging a well and leaving again.
This is part of a long term development plan, and as such, is something I
am keen to support.
As part of the programme, all volunteers have to raise £800, and this is where you guys come in! Yes, anyone who knows me is aware of the amount of traveling I do, but, a £1 donation would still be amazing! The money is not directly linked to paying for MY trip, but rather is collated into the funds of Y-Care in general, and is used to cover projects around the world.
I will of course be taking plenty of photos, and these will be viewable on my Facebook and Flickr sites.
I don't know what else to say really. If you wish to support some fantastic work in some of the world's poorest countries, then please help! Or just donate to ensure ill be gone for a bit!
