Prudential Ride London · 30 July 2017

Many children and young people know little about the countryside and rural way of life. Its programme of educational initiatives will introduce them, and their teachers, to the beauty, importance and diversity of our rural heritage, inspiring them to become passionate about its future and protect it for future generations.

*Update folllowing the ride*

For the record, 100 miles is a very long way on a bicycle, however, thanks to riding with some great friends and for the support from everybody along the route on the day, I managed it!

Thank you for your encouragement and donations ahead of the ride - it really meant a great deal knowing that I was raising money for the Countryside Alliance Foundation and that all the sweat and pain was worthwhile. Hugely relieved that there was virtually no stiffness following the ride which I still can't quite believe, however I am not complaining!

Not sure I will do it again, however I'm always keen for a new challenge and that was certainly a serious one.

Best wishes,

Polly

Background...leading up to the big day!

So far it's been quite a challenging and time-consuming experience trying to get fit enough for what is likely to be 8 hours in the saddle on a Sunday at the end of July.

I'm no fan of cycling, Lycra or high-viz and find holding up the traffic while riding slowly along the roads all rather awkward. Mastering the art of thanking the cars that have been stuck behind me whilst I wobbled away avoiding the inevitable potholes has proved quite a feat in itself.

Having had some bad experiences with cyclists in the past, whenever I see a horse I go out of my way to ensure they are aware I'm behind them, trying to overcome my own prejudices against cyclists and I still think bells on bikes should be compulsory!

For those considering taking up cycling, the only positive thing about the whole experience is the satisfaction of seeing the calorie burn on any one of the numerous fitness apps available. This almost justifies the coffee and cake stops I seem to plan every trip!

All the effort is being done to enable me to raise funds for the  Countryside Alliance Foundation (TCAF), which is a charity that aims to help adults and children alike make the most of the incredible remedial and educational benefits of being involved in the natural environment. By introducing people to the delights of rural Britain, the charity hopes to inspire them to become passionate about the countryside, and helping to protect the natural environment. Thanks for reading and if you can spare a few pennies towards TCAF it would be much appreciated.
