Story

Hello All!

On the 20th of July I am trekking 26 miles of the Lake District in memory of my Grandma, Liz James. This beautiful lady was one in a million, as was my Grandpa Ron and they both taught me the most valuable lessons in life. They were fun, utterly hilarious and the most selfless, giving people I have ever known. Since their passing I have fundraised in their memory for charities that I have close connection to because of them. In the past, I have ran the ‘Race For Life’ with my sister Minnie for Cancer Research and I have fundraised a few times for the Alzheimer’s Society (the most fun and successful being the incredible variety show for my birthday in November 2017 - I can’t thank the talented acts enough who performed).

It’s now time for the next push! And I couldn’t think of anything more apt than travelling up to Cumbria, where my Grandma was born. I’ll be trekking the Lake District, somewhere I’ve never been before for 26 miles and I’m sure she will be close by.

Years ago I worked as a carer in Peaker Park, a home for the elderly, mainly caring for people with dementia. I saw first hand what a cruel disease it is. A difficult thing to see is when those with dementia no longer communicate with words. But something amazing happened. I was working at Christmas and the residents were all having their Christmas dinner. I love the songs from the war and luckily knew the words, so I got in the microphone and started to sing ‘We’ll Meet Again’, ‘White Cliffs of Dover’ and many more. I will never forget witnessing the residents, who no longer spoke, remembering the words to these old songs and singing along with me - it was very emotional! It gave me hope that there has to be something out there to help people with the disease and believe one day there will be a cure.

It’s heartbreaking to see someone you love so much and look up to deteriorate because of this evil disease. All I can say is I’m grateful for the training I received from being a carer so I could look after my Grandma and give my family the extra support needed at this difficult time. Which is why I want to raise money so more support can be given to people with dementia and their families, because it really is needed.

Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.

It would mean the world to me if you could support this fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Society and together let’s kick this disease where the sun don’t shine! Thank you so much for taking the time to read and see you in the Lake District!

I love you Grandma x
