Great North Run 2021 · 12 September 2021 ·

We’re the UK’s leading bowel cancer charity. We’re determined to save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer. Our vision is a future where nobody dies of the disease.

Story

Queen Vic’s Barr-tallion

In September 2019, Vicky was diagnosed with terminal bowel and liver cancer. She lost her battle against this dreadful disease on 2nd March 2020 with family by her side.

During those 6 months of her illness, Vicky was an inspiration to us all - cheerful, active, stoic, keen to fund raise and to support research to help others suffering. We are all very aware how many young people are suffering from this cancer.

Vicky set up this page before she passed away. Queen Vic or QV was her nickname, resulting in team Queen Vic’s Barr-tallion.

Vicky, her brother, James, and her sister, Alex, started running events together in 2007. Their first race together was the Great North Run for Cancer Research UK in memory of their grandmother.

They continued to run a number of half marathon events across the UK before going in for their first London Marathon 2010.

Since meeting in Edinburgh, she and her husband, Alan, ran Park Runs every Saturday together. Then Vicky ran the Edinburgh Half Marathon in 2017.

Vicky encouraged all the family team to take part in the 40th Great North Run on her behalf in September 2020 for Bowel Cancer UK and poignantly she would also have turned 40.

Due to the Pandemic QV’s Barr-Tallion team completed the13.1 mile/21.2km half marathon via Strava/GPS.

Team places for 2021 were rolled over, enabling us all to run in Newcastle on 12th September this year where there’ll be a staggered start and a change to the route.

Click on the cover picture of Vicky to see the participants. We are looking forward to the event and do watch out for us all on the TV coverage.

Vicky was a great charity fundraiser over many years, from when she was at school, which included her charity skydive when she was 17.

She will be with us all every step of the way as we pound the streets of Newcastle in the 2021 GNR.

Many thanks for all your donations up to this point.

If you are able to support our second GNRun - this time in Newcastle - it would mean a lot to us all and the charity, in order to raise awareness of the disease and fund further research.
