Story

Welcome to "NICOLA'S TEAM", we are a team of ladies (see list opposite) who are mostly doing race for life for the first time. Most have been "inspired" or pestered to do Race for Life by me Nicola Wardle.

I live in Guiseley, Leeds with my husband and two boys aged 9 & 6. I will be taking part in my first RACE FOR LIFE in Ilkley on 29th May 2011, together with a big group of friends, who I've inspired to join me, after I was chosen along with five other women nationally to take part in JOIN THE GIRLS a mini musical aimed at getting women to join a local RACE FOR LIFE (see Photos). The person behind all this is my amazing sister in law Debbie Lewis (see photo with Jeff) who has raised £1000s for CR_UK in the past, who will be also joining us on the day.

The reason I am doing RACE FOR LIFE is simple. In 2007 I was diagnosed with a very rare Cancer called GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumour) a type of Sarcoma.

Despite surgery to remove the tumour the Cancer returned and spread to surrounding areas and because Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy do not work. I was given a relatively new drug called Glivec. This drug shrinks tumours and halts its spread. I take this drug daily It wont cure the Cancer but allows me to live with it.

Cancer Research UK is responsible for developing many new life saving drugs including mine and if it wasn't for the continuing development of these drugs, people like me would not be here.

This year I was diagnosed with maligant melanoma, I spotted a very small change in a mole on my shoulder and have had more surgery on that.

All my treatment so far has been at St James's Institute of Oncology in Leeds, they are one of the country's leaders in Cancer Research and rely heavily on donations from people like you to fund this very important research. I wanted to give something back to St James's, by taking part in RACE FOR LIFE and help raise money for new research.

Thank you for visiting my RACE FOR LIFE sponsorship page. Please dig deep and sponsor the TEAM online – it’s quick, easy and totally secure.
