At the age of 12 i found a lump on my neck while i was getting ready for my bed, my mum then found a lump the size of a half boiled egg on my clavical bone, she decided to call faldoc who advised a trip to A and E. The dr in A and E explained that it was just ;lymph nodes and she had never seen them quite as large and to go to my gp on the monday if they werent away, leaving the hospital i felt realived that it was nothing to worry about, however on the monday i went to my gp as the lumps were still there. He prescribed a 1 week course of antibiotics and to return if they hadnt gone within a week. one week later my neck was covered in lumps, my auntie took me back to the drs as my mum was busy, and the dr told her he was 99.9% sure it was nothing to worry about but my auntie wasnt happy and asked for a referal to the hospital. this was in the october, and i got my referal in the febuary to go and see a consultant called Dr Smith. He sat me down and felt my neck and explained he wanted to do a biopsy, and it would b in childrens ward within the next two weeks, but within a week my mum got a phone call for me to go to day surgery to get a lump removed. The night before i got my biospsy result my mum was like to me, this could b cancer i told her not to be silly.
So the next day i went back to outpatients to get my results and this is how i was given them, my mum sat down, i had sat down my gran was just getting her bum on the seat and my dad was just closing the door and Dr Smith exact words were, "well stephanie i have your biopsy results here, you have nodular sclerosing hodgkin's disease tumors tumors and lots of them, you will require 6 months treatment at the beatson in glasgow" i was only 13 years old.
I returned to school that day as it hadnt sunk in, i ended up receiving treatement at Edinburgh Sick Kids, i had stage 3 B hodgkins disease, i was very lucky as stage 4 is harder to treat, i had tumors in my neck heart lungs and spleen an required 6 months of intense chemotherapy.
I feel that i need to give something back to cancer reserach as without people donating before i was diagnoised i might not be here and have my beatiful little girl, so i am doing the race for life to raise much needed funds,
