Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

To mark my latest birthday milestone, donations to the 'KidsTime'
Young Carers and Parental Mental Health programme at Sutton Carers Centre would be most welcome and appreciated. These issues are close to my heart, both personally and professionally - and I have experienced, first-hand, what a difference this work can make to the lives of families affected by mental health and substance misuse issues. I'm sure many of you can relate to these issues, too.

KidsTime Workshops are a fun, safe and supportive environment for families who are affected by mental illness. We’ve found that when young people understand more about their parent’s illness, discuss it in the family, and have a supportive adult to talk to, this increases their resilience and ability to protect their own mental health. Parents say the workshops improve their confidence and sense of pride, and reduce their risk of relapse.

The workshops offer a fun, protected space where young people can express themselves, interact socially, share experiences and learn about mental illness through discussion, games and drama. Trained staff explain mental illness and its effects to young people in a way they can understand and help them to articulate and tackle concerns or challenges. The workshops also provide adults with an informal, intimate space, where they have the opportunity to share experiences and discuss their role as parents rather than patients.

About the charity

Sutton Carers Centre (SCC) supports people who care for family members or friends unpaid. This could mean supporting a disabled child, a husband with dementia, or a sister with mental health problems; a young carer could be looking after a parent with MS or a sibling with autism. SCC provides advice, information, support, therapies and breaks, so that carers can stay well and supported too.
