Camborne & Redruth Charities Sponsored Walk · 1 October 2017

EVERY 90 SECONDS someone in the UK is admitted to hospital with an acquired brain injury (ABI). There are many possible causes, such as a fall, a road traffic accident, an assault, a tumour or a stroke. A brain injury can happen to anyone, at any time. When it does, we're here to help

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I first became aware of Headway's fantastic work some years ago. They were a tremendous support when a friend sustained a brain injury.

Fast forward a number of years to 2015. I started to become unwell myself. I lost my balance and started falling over and experienced really bad headaches.  I had lots of investigations. An MRI scan showed that, alongside a small Pituitary Adenoma, I had widespread white matter lesions on my brain. The general consensus was that I had sustained a small stroke or trans-ischaemic attack, and/or cerebrovascular disease. It was highly inconvenient, as I was just about to retire from the NHS and had lots of things planned!

I had to rest. I was started on medication. I could not drive for a long time and needed to hold onto someone (usually my lovely husband) when I went out, as I tended to want to fall over to the left. I slept a lot too - under normal circumstances I would've welcomed extra kip......but enforced rest when you're poorly can be frustrating! It took a good while, but with the wonderful support from my husband, family and friends and the NHS I'm really good now and determined to enjoy life.

This episode reminded me of the good work I'd seen Headway do in those previous years. It could so easily have been me - or any of us - needing their expert services. Brain injuries can happen for all sorts of reasons, -trauma, stroke, vascular disease - so when I became aware of this walk I knew that I wanted to sign up for it and raise funds for them.

Headway Cornwall run two groups in the County. One in Scorrier and the other in Lostwithiel. I have met the lovely folk in the Scorrier group and would love to raise funds for them, so that they can continue, and possibly expand, their activities.

Thank you. Lots of love,

Rachel.
