Story
I'M FINALLY DOING IT!!!
For those of you who know me, you know the story, but for those who don't, let me summarise:
In September 1984, I suddenly found Geography interesting! There were Tectonic Plates and Volcanos! Coupled with David Attenborough's 'The Living Planet' series released early that same year, I discovered the world's highest single free-standing mountain in the world - Kilimanjaro! Right there and then, at the grand age of 12, I decided that one day I would stand at the top of that mountain!
Fast forward to 2020. My Mum was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. I sat with her one evening and told her that I was going to stop 'thinking' about when I would climb Kilimanjaro, and I was going to do it for my 50th birthday! That was the last evening I had with my Mum, and 2 weeks later I booked my trip!
July 2022 saw me reach my half-century, and I embraced it fully by finding a new thing to do for each month that I'm 50!
So, on the 6th July 2023, just before I turn 51, I will depart for the African continent and head for that big hill determined to reach the top! I know I will have my Mum watching over me and encouraging me, and that is why I made the decision to do this climb, not only for my 'half century', but also in memory of my Mum.
As I have already paid for the trip I have no fundraising target I need to reach. However, seeing as I am doing a 'once in a lifetime' challenge, I decided to set up a page where you can spur me on by making donations, no matter how small, all of which go directly to the charity. I chose Macmillan as they do fantastic work and really are there for families in their darkest hours.
I've even done a blog, so I can document my horror at the realisation of what I've signed up for! Read all about it and sign up for the updates here: Kilimanjaro – My Long Walk Up A Big Hill! | Ending my half century year in style! (fiftyandfabulous.blog)
Thank you for your support.
