WE DID IT!!!!! THE FANCE DANCE - COMPLETED!
Gary and Rachel are going to attempt a challenge of a lifetime on July 7th. The Fan Dance is part of the SAS (British Special Forces) Test Selection. The event is 24km over Pen Y Fan mountain, carrying a Bergen. Gary will be carrying 45 lbs and Rachel, 35 lbs. (Men must carry 35 lbs, plus at least 4 litres of water = 45 lbs; women must carry 25 lbs, plus 4 litres of water = 35 lbs.) It involves "tabbing" uphill and running down the hills and on the flat. The SAS qualifying time is 4 hours or less, though you have 6 hours before they drag you off the mountain.
The training is tough. We have been preparing by doing both short and longer runs with weight, training on the flat, as well as in the hills. We also do 2-3 British Military Fitness sessions a week.
Unfortunately, everyone knows at least one person who has/had Cancer. One in two people in the UK will develop Cancer in their lifetime...and that is a terrifying and horrible statistic. We want to do our small bit to help researchers find a cure.
Gary and I have several friends battling different forms of Cancer right now. On July 7th, when we are in pain/exhausted and inevitably feel like we can't go any further, we will be thinking of them, as well as all of the generous donors who are helping us reach our goal. Thank you in advance.
