Story

I have created this page for Rachel's family. The words were provided by Ian, Rachel's husband. Thank you for taking the time to read on. Dan.

Rachel’s Story

Rachel’s story started at Easter 2018, when she was diagnosed with colon cancer.  From this moment she did not allow her illness to define her as she carried on living a life to the full taking trips to Scarborough, London, Manchester and Liverpool.  She disliked it when people described her as brave as she said that involved a choice.
Her attitude was “It is what it is”.  She would face every chemotherapy treatment with “What do I need to do?”

Rachel is remembered as a much-loved wife, mother, daughter and friend to many.  She was a teacher for 27 years, a vocation which she loved but retired early from because of her illness.

Towards the end of her life she was finally forced to slow down.  However, she was able to attend her son’s wedding, but shortly after this it became apparent that time was running out. At this point HospiceCare North Northumberland entered our lives.  The care which they provided was second-to-none.  This enabled Rachel to spend her last days at home with her family.

The carers and nurses were not just there for Rachel but for the whole
family, they were constantly ensuring we were OK.  They were a shoulder to cry on as well as carers for Rachel and the overnight care was invaluable.  It takes a very special person to do this work with such dedication and care.
Rachel was the flamingo among the pigeons, and HospiceCare North
Northumberland ensured she had a peaceful dignity at the end.  Thank you from all her family and friends.
