Hello All, 

In a week I am running the Birmingham Half Marathon for the Birmingham Children's Hospital. My sister, Radella, works closely with the BCH and can vouch for the excellent service they run for unwell children. I will let her give the details:

"The Metabolic Team have helped one particular family that i have had the pleasure of working with.

I hope to raise money for the metabolic team and to raise awareness about the condition, glutaric aciduria Type 1. This is caused by the body not breaking down an amino acid called lysine (a building block of protein) due to an enzyme deficiency. This causes a build up of toxic chemicals in the body that damage part of the brain that controls movement. 

What i feel most passionate about is that in America they test all new borns for this condition and if they are found to have it, the babies are put on a special diet, preventing a build up in chemicals and resulting in abnormal movements. In the UK, they do not test babies."

With further funds and awareness this type of treatment could be made possible in the UK.
