Story

Liz, Laura, Kirsten and Claire take on the Cahors Challenge

About four months ago our colleague Lisa told us about a cycling challenge her fiancé was doing. It involved 500 miles of cycling between four people, understanding bike mechanics, and raising money for charity. Collectively we possess the mechanical skills of a toddler and will find this amount of cycling truly challenging, but the prospect of getting rock hard thighs and outrageous tan lines that only cyclists understand sold it to us.

On the 29 September we will start the Cahors Challenge in St Malo, cycling 500 miles between us through Samur and the Massif Centrale, finishing on the stunning 14 Century medieval bridge over the Lot at Cahors three days later. 70 teams will undertake this challenge, raising money for charities to research diseases and cancers that affect an insane number of us.

We will be raising money for Alzheimers Society. Dementia affects 820,000 people in the UK and 25 million of us in this country have or have known a friend or family member with dementia. This includes two of us doing the ride, who so desperately would have liked to have seen a different outcome to the pain and deterioration that happens when the disease takes the brain hostage. The money raised will go towards funding research. What else can you do when you feel so helpless but support those who are trying to find a cure or develop better treatments?

Please donate as much as you can. Every penny will go to charity.

We will also be trying to extract money from you via cake sales/raffles/or through our beautiful smiles & fluttering of the eyelashes! All support is hugely appreciated.

More about the Ride:

Teams will leave from Portsmouth on the overnight ferry to St Malo on Wednesday 28September. Starting under the historic walls of this maritime city, they will cycle from Brittany into Normandy and head south over the Loire to spend the first night in the home of pre- Champagne favourite fizz, Saumur. Then, following river valleys that climb into the foothills of the Massif Central, they will spend the second night on the outskirts of the city of Limoges. Riding on south towards the headwaters of the Dordogne on day three, the Challenge finish line is the 14 century medieval bridge over the river Lot at Cahors, home to the “black wine” revered by Tzars, Popes and Princes. Teams will return to Portsmouth from Caen late on Sunday 2 October.
