Story

Picture of Archie by Gerrard Binks

DBA is a rare and little known condition effecting approx 125 people in

the UK and less than 1000 worldwide. There is currently no cure and each treatment path causes other problems in the body, therefore DBA UK fund vital research into this terrible life threatening condition.

A few friends of Archie's mum and dad have got together and decided on a couple of challenges involving hiking to try and raise some funds for a very worthy charity close to our hearts.

The first challenge will be the Yorkshire 3 Peaks which will be undertaken by Paul Jackson and Paul Petty on the 25th May 2019.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks are arranged in a triangle, with the River Ribble and two minor B roads between them. The total walking distance is 39.2km (24.5 miles). The Yorkshire Three Peaks are situated in the Yorkshire Dales and the challenge consists of climbing the summit of Pen-y-ghent (694m; 2,227 ft), Whernside (736 m; 2415 ft) and Ingleborough (723m; 2,372ft) in less than 12 hours. They are planning to start the walk from Horton-in-Ribblesddale at 5:30a.m on Saturday the 25thMay so will be look at leaving Harrogate for around 4:00a.m.
The main checkpoints along the route are:
Horton-in-Ribblesdale (start)
Pen-y-ghent summit
Ribblehead
Whernside summit
Chapel-le-Dale
Ingleborough summit
Horton-in-Ribblesdale (end)

The second challenge to will be undertaken by Ray Green, Jason & Janine Layfield, Dean Flintoft (Archies Dad) and Nick Smith. This will take place on the 13th June 2019 when the group will be taking on a three day challenge to summit the national three peaks, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike & Snowdon.

The journey will start on the 12th with a long drive from Harrogate to Fort William in the Scottish Highlands (240 miles /6 hours). We will camp overnight at the foot of Ben Nevis(Glen Nevis Campsite) & then begin the 1352 meter climb to the summit via the mountain track route (10.75 miles) We hope to complete this stage in around 7 hours.

We return back to Fort William with a 256 mile/ 5.5 hour journey to the Lake District, where we will camp for the evening at Wasdale National Trust Campsite.  Scafell pike is not quite as high (978 meters)  & we should be able to complete the 6 mile route in around 4 hours, weather dependent.

That's 2 down one to go!  Probably the worst stretch of driving to come, going down to North Wales via the M6. This will depend on traffic etc so might take 4 to 5 hours to travel just over 210 miles. Base camp for Snowdon will be Llyn Gwynant campsite allowing us to start the walk at pen-y-pass and take pyg route up the mountain. This route is 7 miles long & should take around 6 hours to complete  the hike, summiting at 725 meters.(start point is already 360 meters above sea level) a total height of 1085 meters.

We will appreciate any donations to go to this very worth while charity.
