Story
4 years ago our lives changed in a way we had never dreamed. My daughter Evie (aged 7) had lost weight (Thin), wasn't her usual bubbly self (Tired), was drinking lots of water (Thirsty) and peeing lots (Toilet). I had no idea of the 4Ts. On their own, no big deal. Put them together and things can get very serious, very quickly.
I want more families to be aware of the danger signs of Diabetes and to know to act fast and seek medical help - a simple pee/blood test is all it takes.
Thankfully we were alert when my nephew Jude (13 months) showed the same signs. Although we are devastated that he now also faces a lifetime of regular blood testing and insulin therapy, at least we caught it before he ended up in a diabetic coma or worse.
Type 1 Diabetes is massively on the increase, with more and more children and babies being affected every day. Living with the condition is a constant battle of blood testing for sugar levels V. counting the carbs in food V. balancing exercise V. changes in hormones V.... you name it, anything can make it tricky!!
I dream of a day when they will be able to prevent other families having to go through the turmoil and pressures of managing such a difficult condition. This is why I run for JDRF.
Thank you for any donations. From the girl who used to eat soap at sports days because she hated racing, who became the mum (and auntie) who hates even more seeing families have to bear the weight of the chronic, lifelong condition; Diabetes.
