Pre-eclampsia is a serious disease of pregnancy, affecting up to 10% of pregnancies and leading to the death of around 1000 babies in the UK each year. Worldwide every 6 minutes a woman dies from pre-eclampsia. APEC aims to raise awareness, improve care and provide support. HELPLINE: 01386 761848

Story

This coming year I will be progressing my running journey and taking on (at least) three marathons and three ultra marathons in the name of Action on Pre-eclampsia!

Pre-eclampsia is a serious disease of pregnancy, affecting up to 10% of pregnancies and leading to the death of around 700 babies in the UK each year.

What is Pre-eclampsia?

Pre-eclampsia is the most common of the serious complications of pregnancy. It is caused by a defect in the placenta, which joins the mother and baby and supplies the baby with nutrients and oxygen from the mother’s blood.


Why do we need to raise awareness?

Pre-eclampsia continues to be the most common of the serious complications of pregnancy and impacts on thousands of women in the UK each year. Worldwide the figures are stark. It is estimated that 4,000,000 have pre-eclampsia every year. 100,000 of these go on to have eclamptic fits. Every 6 minutes a woman dies as a result of pre-eclampsia.
