Catriona’s story ……..

Thank you for taking the time to visit our ‘JustGiving page’.

 We are getting married on 31 August 2013 and would really like to take this opportunity to help find a prevention and cure for dementia through supporting the ongoing scientific research being undertaken around the clock in the hope of defeating dementia and perhaps one day stopping the disease in its tracks.

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia. There is currently no cure for the disease which worsens as it progresses. As the disease advances, symptoms include short term memory loss, confusion, irritability, mood swings, trouble with language and difficulty with day-to-day tasks. This particularly cruel disease strips away the dignity of the sufferer as wells as putting a huge strain upon the person who cares for the person with Alzheimer’s.

My father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s around 8 years ago. Within the last 2 years his condition has steadily worsened. It is awful for such an intelligent and well respected doctor and father to be unable to remember things for more than a few seconds, and more recently to have difficulty with day-to-day tasks that you and I take for granted. It is devastating for my mother to see day by day the impact that this cruel disease has on my father. The strain put on my mother, as carer, is immense and impacts on my mothers’ health and well being.

 Alzheimer Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity specialising in finding preventions, causes, treatments and a cure for dementia. Every research project funded by donations has the potential to provide a breakthrough and bring new hope for people living with Alzheimer’s and their families. Some facts about the disease……..

 There are more than 820,000 people living with dementia in the UK;

  • Every 3.2 minutes, someone in the UK develops dementia;
  • One in three people over the age of 65 will die with dementia;
  • If scientists could delay the onset of Alzheimer’s by 5 years, we could halve the number of people who die with dementia;
  • Alzheimer’s is not an inevitable part of growing old. It is a disease, and as such it can be cured;
  • Good quality research is our only hope of finding that cure.

 Donating through ‘JustGiving’ is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with ‘JustGiving’ – they will never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they will send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - to raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now.

 Many thanks, Catriona
