We provide quality care to help people thrive after a brain injury

Story

Hi my name is Richard, I am raising money in memory of my daughter Mia who was born with severe brain damage. It all began when me and my partner found out we were having twins which was quite a shock. Through out the pregnancy my partner and I attended all the scans and appointments and was told that one of the twins was not growing and that they were worried that both twins would die because of this. We were devastated. the twin that they were worried about was the smaller twin who we named chloe. We tried to carry on as normal for the sake of our son dylan who was 2 years old at the time but as you can imagine this was extremely hard with all the appointments we had to attend for the pregnancy. At 34 weeks and 6 days my partner after being in hospital for 2 weeks already on bed rest gave birth to both twins via c-section with the twins weighing 4lb 9oz (Mia) and 3lb 10oz (Chloe) apart from being very small they seemed fine. A few days later Mia started to have seizures and so the doctors started there tests which included a lumber punch and an mri scan. As you can imagine we were worried sick not knowing what was happening for several days we waited then the doctor sat us down and told us the results we were devastated to find out she had severe brain damage. Through perseverance we were able to get Mia to feed orally and so after a month in the neonatal unit we were able to bring Mia home with us and reunite her with her twin who was released 2 weeks earlier in perfect health after being the twin the doctors were all concerned about. Things seemed to be going fine for a while until chloe began to grow up and that's when we started to notice the differences Mia seemed to be frozen in time never developing as her sister was. But worse than that she started to forget, it got so bad she forgot how to eat and drink and so it was back to the hospitals for more tests. She was given an ng tube and later on a gastostromy tube so we could give her substance and she was put on more medication including seizure medication and sleeping medication as she was diagnosed with overactive reflexes meaning she couldn't relax the muscles and she was sleeping less and less. And so it went on this way in and out of the hospitals until she was 21 months old and her brain started to shut her body down we rushed her to hospital as she just seemed sick until the doctors told us what was happening. We stayed with her in the hospital but the next morning we were awoken by her monitors going off it seemed like time had stopped but then the doctors stated the time of death and my world seemed to dissolve I couldn't believe it. We were broken and didn't know what to do, it was the worst day of our lives. We were moved into a side room with Mia and the rest of our family so we could say our goodbyes.
