I have been successful in receiving a London marathon place through the ballot. However after working closely with South Wiltshire Mencap over the past 8 years I wanted to give something back and raise money for such a fantastic charity. South Wilts Mencap supports people with learning disabilities; inspiring individuals to achieve their full potential and enabling them and their families to lead active, more fuller lives. 

I have seen firsthand the difference South Wilts Mencap makes within the local community including planning events, delivering activities, supporting day centres and running weekly social clubs. Through my work with South Wilts Mencap I have been fortunate enough to witness individuals develop their sporting skills as well as everyday skills many of us take for granted. This includes improvements in hand eye coordination, balance, general fitness and flexibility as well as seeing improved social skills leading to developing better relationships and increases in confidence and self esteem.

The money raised will be split 50:50 between South Wiltshire Mencap and the national charity Mencap. South Wilts Mencap have costs that include the running of the activity days, staff to oversee the days, rent for premises and costs involved with running their family/visitor support service.

Nationally, it is estimated that there are 200 babies born each week with a learning disability. Without specialist support from the start, those children will find it difficult to reach their potential which can impact not just on their lives but also their families lives. It can cost £1500 a year to support just one family so if you can spare just £1 it really will go some way to making a difference.
