I will never forget the moment I turned to say 'Goodbye' to my parents, as I lay in the Pre-Theatre room not knowing if I would ever wake up.. That memory will haunt and be with me for the rest of my life.
Late in February 2015 I was diagnosed with a Temporal Lobe Brain Tumour after suffering a series of Epileptic seizures. As one would expect the thought of being diagnosed with a Tumour is life changing
and prose could never justify how you begin to comprehend, process & communicate that news with your loved ones in the immediate aftermath.
I have been incredibly lucky that my surgery was a success and that the Tumour removed was not malignant. Subsequent scans have presented no immediate regrowth or complications, with suffering no Seizures Post-Operation my prognosis looks incredibly positive.
That said not everyone has & will continue to be as fortunate like I have been thus far in my recovery. Brain Tumours are the biggest cancer killer of Children and Adults under 40, yet essential Research is chronically underfunded. Over 25 people are diagnosed every single day and the mortality statistics make for a desperately upsetting read. Just 14% of adults will survive for 5 years after diagnosis & one child will die every 3 days from a Brain Tumour.
The Brain Tumour Charity help fund vital pioneering research aiming for breakthroughs in diagnosing and providing treatment for patients, but as they sadly receive no Government funding they rely 100% on voluntary donations to maintain their work. Aside from the Charities medical contributions, the physical & overwhelming emotional support they offer to those who have diagnosed and the families who have to live with the news can never be understated. Tumours do not just transform the lives of those who have to live with them, but the loved ones around them and that is why I want to try and give something back in the hope that no-one will ever be alone whilst battling this.
I love running and taking part in Marathons so I see this as a fitting way to raise money for the Brain Tumour Charity and hopefully I will continue to regain my fitness and give everything I have in both Berlin & Bristol for the cause. I have some great ideas to raise money and prizes for those who guess my correct finishing time!
Thank You for reading this and supporting me through my recovery & aiding the Brain Tumour Charity, it means everything to me. Further information about BTS can be found on the website link on the JustGiving page.
