For those of you that knew Les (my father-in-law), know what an active man & life he liked to lead. Despite being diagnosed with Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) 3 years ago, his determination to continue an active life was clear. His 'can do attitude' meant that he continued to travel the world & regularly go to the swimming pool. He also loved being a grandfather & great grandfather & playing with the kids. However due to IPF he had to give up a lot of the outdoor activities he loved including tennis & sailing over the last few years.
IPF is a condition in which the lungs become scarred & breathing becomes increasingly difficult. It's not clear what causes it, but it usually affects people around 70-75 years of age and is rare in people under 50. Several treatments can help reduce the rate at which IPF gets worse, but there's currently no treatment that can stop or reverse the scarring of the lungs.
Les was a truly wonderful man & an inspiration to all that met him. So I have decided in memory of Les & his 'can do attitude' that I'm going to run Fremantle's half & aim for a PB of sub 1:40 (5 minutes faster than last year).
By donating through JustGiving you're not only honouring Les's memory but also helping support Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis, a U.K. charity focused on improving the quality of life for pulmonary fibrosis patients and funding research. JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails.
