Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In November I will be joining a small team to attempt the first ever ascent of the 6,000m Karbu Ri, a currently unclimbed peak in the remote region of Rolwaling. The peak sits at the head of one of the 7 hidden valleys of the Himalaya on the border with Tibet. The whole climb is scheduled to take 23 days and will without question be the most challenging trek I have undertaken to date.
As a proud ambassador for Afrikids I am seeking to raise funds to support their invaluable work protecting child rights in northern Ghana. The trek is entirely self funded so all money raised will go to support Afrikids work. The specific project that I am seeking to raise funds to support is Operation Smiles.
At the heart of Operation Smiles is Sister Jane, an inspirational woman who is a trained agriculturist and nurse. She is a local hero and has saved countless babies from death. She runs the Nakuuabi Young Mothers' Centre, the focal point for Operation Smiles which cares for babies who have been orphaned, neglected, or accused of being a spirit. Each baby that goes to the Centre is accompanied by an appropriate adult from their extended family (this can also be their mother, but the majority of the time children go to the Centre because they have lost their mother). The babies at the Centre are at risk of losing their lives in their first few months and need intensive and urgent medical care, nutrition and shelter. Whilst at the Centre, the adults receive parenting skills in order to be able to care for the child and reintegrate into society, as most beneficiaries stay for three to six months, and are monitored for at least 12 months afterwards.
How your support could help:
- £20 would be enough to provide four children with access to free, quality healthcare for a year
- £120 would be enough to fund a new bed, mattress, pillow and bedding for a child being cared for at Sr. Jane's Centre
- £536 would be enough to feed all of the babies and children residing at the Centre for three months
- £1,000 would be enough to provide health education workshops in remote communities for a year, helping to reduce risk and improve healthcare prospects for vulnerable families.
