Story
In October 2015, just three weeks before his 40th birthday, my brother-in-law Dave was diagnosed with Mesothelioma, a terminal cancer caused by breathing in asbestos dust. He had surgery to remove his left lung just before Christmas and has undergone a course of chemotherapy over the last few months. He has never knowingly worked or come into contact with asbestos in his life and this diagnosis has turned his life, my sister's life and my niece and nephew's life upside down.
He has been writing an amazing and inspiring blog www.davestaleyblog.wordpress.com to raise awareness of mesothelioma, in particular research into effective treatments and share his story to help others. I want to help him do this and raise funds through cycling the RideLondon-Surrey 100, specifically targeting money raised towards the British Lung Foundation's Mesothelioma Research Campaign.
There’s currently no cure for mesothelioma, more than 90% of people die within three years of diagnosis, and yet it receives very little funding compared to other cancers with similar mortality rates, which is why any money is so desperately needed. You can read more about their campaign at www.blf.org.uk/Page/Meso-campaign
Since November 2015, Dave's blog has been viewed by over 9,000 people in over 40 countries and been an inspiration to many and will help me up those Surrey hills. It's been a rollercoaster of a ride for Dave, my sister and their family over the last eight months and the Surrey hills won't compare at all, but if through my short ride in comparison, I can raise some significant funding for vital research and raise the profile of this cancer and the Meso Warrior campaign I will have helped in a small way.
