Story

Hello. How are you?

My name is Sally. I was born in England. That was pretty
lucky, because since my birth I have had years of free, good-quality, inclusive education.

This- sad to say- is not the norm for the majority of people worldwide. My own mother did not enjoy the same education in Nigeria that I had
in England, and neither did my Sierra Leonean father. This is not to say that they had no education at all- both Nigeria and Sierra Leone have
state-controlled public education, as does Nepal.

But it is not enough to simply have a school. In order to learn, children need a safe friendly environment, well qualified teachers, and varied engaging teaching styles.

Hence why I- at 18 years old and after completing 13 years of education- decided to take my volunteering efforts to Nepal with the charity VSO.

VSO works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries. The volunteers' skills, knowledge and sheer enthusiasm make lasting and far reaching change in the world's poorest communities. I’m fundraising in support of all VSO funded projects, which benefit around 2 million people every year. By donating to my page you are not paying for just one placement, you are supporting all of VSO’s vital work, enabling them to continue to change the world through the power of volunteering.

As part of the 3-month-long 'Lalitpur II Education Project', my team and I will live in a local rural village in Lalitpur, Nepal. We will be placed in a local government school and assigned a teacher to work with. Living in the village will allow us to integrate into the community and work with the families of local children, school committees and community members. As well as students and youth, we will also work with local women’s groups and government officials.

Also, since not all life lessons are academic, we will work to promote extra curricular activities, reading for pleasure, and teach the life-changing importance of WaSH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), DRR (Disaster Risk Reduction) and SRH (Sexual and Reproductive Health). This will all be taught along with the themes of the 'empowerment and education of women and girls' and 'climate change awareness'.

Thank you for reading.

I am grateful for any contribution to my fundraising target
