Story
Approximately 3 years ago, my Dad was diagnosed with a condition called Ataxia. Over the course of many years and the experience of different doctors and specialists, there is still yet to be any known treatments that are successful in helping his condition, meaning due to the condition he has sadly become disabled - losing mobility, coordination and having difficulties with his speech.
According to a survey completed by Ataxia UK, less than 13% (12.89%) of the UK population have heard of Ataxia. I therefore want to try and raise as much awareness and as much money as possible for such a worthy cause.
In October this year, I have decided to complete two marathons a week apart to help raise awareness and funds for a charity which is close to me and my family’s heart.
I would really appreciate any support, no matter how small, and to please continue to share the word about Ataxia. Further details about the condition & charity can be found below.
Thank you, Sam x
The Challenge
To help fund research for this dehabiliting condition, I will be running back to back marathons a week apart in Richmond (October 9th) and Amsterdam (October 16th)
What is Ataxia?
"Ataxia" is the name given to a group of conditions that affects the cerebellum: the part of the brain that controls movement and sends signals through the nervous system, which causes problems with balance, co-ordination and speech, disturbing the ability to communicate and control the body. There are many different types of ataxia and it is progressive, meaning that it gets worse over time. Currently there is no cure.
The Charity
Ataxia UK is the leading national charity in the UK for people affected by any type of ataxia. They fund research into finding treatments and cures, and offer advice, information and support to people affected by the condition
