Story
We are a couple of good friends (friends for c25 years), who are undertaking the challenge of walking 21.5 miles along the Cinder Track, all the way from Scarborough to Whitby. One of us is an experienced walker and one of us has not done anything like this distance before...neither of us is underestimating the stamina needed on the day (planned for 18th September). We are hoping for kind weather and will reward ourselves with Fish and Chips, and maybe an ice cream too!
We are doing this to raise money for the Yorkshire Brain Tumour Charity. A charity very close to our hearts.
Chris (Sara's husband) has a Grade 4 brain tumour, which was diagnosed in August 2021. This came completely out of nowhere, striking suddenly with an A&E admission in the July, followed by 8 days in hospital and a 5 week wait for a follow up MRI. This is how we found out how little is known about this type of cancer - no known cause, and little development in treatments. Chris has been very well looked after by the hospitals in Leeds and has undergone surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy but sadly his tumour has continued to spread. For Chris it impacts his speech, language and memory, but it impacts different people in many different ways - the brain is very complex.
Context from the charity - Brain Tumours can affect anyone, at any time. They are the single biggest killer of the under 40's in the UK. Every week approx 15 people are diagnosed with a brain tumour in Yorkshire. Research has been underfunded for brain tumours, with current treatments nearly 40 years old. We aim to fund world-class research here in Yorkshire to find treatments and a cure. Whilst we do that we will provide support to people living with and affected by brain tumours, emotionally, practically and financially for as long as they need us.
Please donate and help us raise as much cash as we can!
