Sara's Ben Nevis Challenge

Ben Nevis Challenge · 10 June 2017
As a keen walker I am often drawn to explore the numerous peaks our beautiful country has to offer, so I have decided to take on perhaps the ultimate challenge and attempt to conquer the highest mountain in the British Isles, Ben Nevis.
To help spur me and my fellow hikers in our challenge I have chosen to support Tommy’s charity, who fund medical research into the causes of premature birth, stillbirth, and miscarriage.
It wasn’t a tough decision for me to choose this charity and by doing so I am
hoping to raise a little money towards funding, which will help others who find
themselves facing a similar journey to what myself and my husband Phil have
been through.
Since 2011 our dreams and plans of extending our family were shattered and our lives turned upside down by a sequence of events that followed our first
miscarriage.
Anyone who has endured this heartache will know, it’s a hidden subject that
isn’t talked about, a club that everyone who wishes to start a family dreads to
join.
All the joy and elation of finding out you are going to be introducing a new
life into this world is suddenly snatched away in an instant and it is
completely devastating.
Just weeks after suffering my first miscarriage our emotions were again pulled
inside out when I discovered I was pregnant again, but sadly our twisted fate struck once more and it was not meant to be.
Fast forward a few years and this was our rollercoaster life which we led after
suffering a total of six pregnancy losses altogether.
The impact on our lives was incredible: the tests; the waiting; the anxiety;
the tears & heartache; the mourning over and over again.
It affected everything in our day to day existence and completely flattened us.
Despite all the available tests on the NHS we had no concrete reason for why my body couldn’t hold on to our babies.
Deflated and too scared to try again I took the hardest decision to call it a
day after our last loss. It still stings my heart and I know it always will.
I am very fortunate to have a wonderful son who is 14, I now believe he was my miracle baby, I feel very blessed to have him and my amazing husband whose support was incredible throughout even though he was broken equally as much as me.
If I am able to raise a little money for Tommy’s that will help prevent others from suffering this heartache, or support them through the darkest of times, then I know the challenge of Ben Nevis will be worth every single step we take.
Here’s a little info on what we will be taking on…
Ben Nevis is located in the western end of the Grampian Mountain range in
Scotland, standing at 1,345 meters (4,412 ft) above sea level it is the highest
mountain in the British Isles.
My challenge will cover a distance of approximately 10½ miles in total and I’m pleased to be supported by my husband Phil and a couple of friends who have crazily volunteered to join us.
We will be attempting this challenge in August 2017.
