Thanks for visiting our LCAS bike ride page for 2010!
We're cycling from Leeds to Knaresborough (20 miles) or there and back again (40 miles).
All funds raised will go to support the work of the Community Movment in La Concha: a fantastic organisation which is made up of local people working for themselves to make better lives for their whole community. Recent projects we've supported include a women's credit project, which has helped women to start small businesses such as baking, sewing and handicrafts to support their families.
Current needs include funds to enable a cooperative to extend their production of pineapple and pitahaya (a local cactus fruit) from which they make wine, and repairs to the roof of the Community Movement's training and meeting room: essential as it's now the rainy season and they've written to tell us that they're all currently getting very wet!
Times are hard in Nicaragua as unusually heavy rains have ruined maize and bean crops, and make living in poor housing conditions very difficult. Members of the Community Movement tell us how important it is to them to know that there are people in Leeds in solidarity with them, and at the moment, they need all the support we can offer.
