Logan is my grandson. Logan looks like any other normal little boy. Sadly Logan isn't a normal little boy. Logan was born with life threatening conditions and without Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital (GOSH) he simply wouldn't be with us today. In the first few hours of life it was clear Logan was struggling...
Logan was born on the 13th January 2015 & on the 19th; he was rushed to GOSH by critical care ambulance. Life changed that day immeasurably... Logan was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease; congenital hyperinsulinism (CHI) and as a result; severe high blood pressure.
Logan spent the first few months of life in GOSH (& long spells within his first year) as the amazing specialist doctors/staff tried to stabilise his conditions. During this time Logan underwent surgery under general anaesthetic on three separate occasions. No price could be paid for the specialist care Logan received during this time.
Logan's kidneys will continue to form cysts which will continue to scar as they disperse and which will eventually prevent them from working. At some point Logan will need a kidney transplant. Logan's CHI means his pancreas produces too much insulin which draws the sugar from his blood; leaving him susceptible to extreme low blood sugars (hypoglycaemia). The result of these conditions means he has high blood pressure which puts continual pressure on his little heart.
All these conditions are extremely specialised and are continually being supervised/overseen & monitored by GOSH.
Logan requires medicating three times daily (6 medications in total). Each medication must be administered orally & must stay digested for a minimum of 30mins (or be re-administered!). No easy feat with a 'kidney kid' as they are prone to being sick & can do so with great ease!!! In addition to this Logan has his blood sugars tested regularly through the day/night; likewise his blood pressure. The equipment used to do this is costly and all of which has been provided by GOSH to ensure Logan's continual wellbeing.
The specialist medications Logan received and continues to receive are extremely expensive and beyond the means of any normal family income.
We all think our children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews etc will be born happy & healthy so very little thought goes in to the "what happens if they're not?"
Thanks to Great Ormond Street my grandson has been given the chance of life and nothing could ever repay that. If, with the support of friends, family, colleagues & the generous donations of others, fundraising can give just a little bit back and which would allow GOSH to help other families in the same or similar circumstances; it has got to be worth it!
