Story
If you know me in real life (or from social media), you'll probably know I REALLY love running - almost as much as I love animals.
However, it's still a pretty new thing for me, and half a marathon is REALLY far - so to ensure I don't chicken out along the way, I thought I'd use it as a chance to help animals in need!
I'm therefore fundraising for The Mayhew Animal Home, which (full disclaimer) is where I work and where I spend the majority of time when I'm NOT running.
Mayhew is an animal welfare charity and shelter with a difference - our work extends beyond re-homing and adoption. We run a number of innovative and proactive programmes which tackle the root causes of animal neglect, abuse and abandonment in our community, and we successfully campaign to get important animal welfare issues recognised and protected by UK law.
We recognise that human welfare issues and animal welfare issues are linked, and we support animals and owners from all walks of life without judgement. We protect the bond that homeless, vulnerable and 'at risk' people have with their beloved companions, and we offer free and low cost veterinary treatment, advice and food to those who need it most.
It costs £6,000 per day to run Mayhew, including:
- £5 per day to feed each animal in our care
- £10 to vaccinate an animal against rabies and other infectious diseases
- £15 to provide a heat pad for a sick or injured animal
- £25 to give a health check to a homeless person's dog
- £50 to support a vulnerable pet and their owner through a short term crisis
- £75 to provide immediate care for an abandoned animal
- £150 to visit a care home or hospice with our therapy animal team
I'm so, so proud to work for Mayhew, and to be running on behalf of our vets, animal welfare officers, support staff, owners and animals.
£330 would pay for one of everything above - so if you can spare a few pennies or pounds, please drop them in this virtual bucket, and help me make a real difference to the lives of pets and animals in need.
Thank you! x
