Abseil was postponed on the 22nd October due to bad weather - we are hoping to try again on the 5th November.
I am going to be taking part in the charity abseil down the seven-storey accommodation block at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig in Sleat! This is to raise money for the children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent. I will be paying the £20 abseil cost myself so all donations will go directly to CLIC Sargent. Please give generously - all donations appreciated.
Many thanks! Sarah Jane (Info about CLIC Sargent below)
Every 24 hours, 10 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer.
One day your child is visiting a consultant because they have been unwell for a while and no one can put their finger on it, the next day your child is in Sick Kids at Yorkhill or the Western Royal Infirmary and your whole life will be thrown upside down.
You have started on an emotional and financial rollercoaster, that might last a very long time, that might see your child bounce back, survive but have to face new problems for the rest of their life or may result in their death (on average 3 out of 10 diagnosed with cancer will die).
In the Highlands and Islands, we have a CLIC Sargent Care Professional at Raigmore who provides individual support to the children and young people and their families and helps access financial support to families in need, to help them cope with the added cost of cancer, which can be a huge and unexpected burden. We also have a Paediatric Oncology Nurse Specialist who explains the disease and treatment, carries out routine tests and treatment in the community and at the weekly clinic, gives support and reassurance and helps to provide palliative care at home for the 25% who will not survive.
Although based at the hospital, both these posts involve travel around the Highlands. A similar service is funded at Aberdeen.
Whilst being treated in Glasgow or Edinburgh for weeks, months or even longer. CLIC Sargent provides self catering accommodation for families at their Homes from Home at Cruachan House in Glasgow and CLIC Villa in Edinburgh, situated within 2 minutes from each hospital. Our play specialist will help prepare the child for all the procedures they go through and take some of the pressure of mum and dad.
Whether a child is recovering or has a terminal diagnosis, Malcolm Sargent House at Prestwick provides holidays for families in a stress free environment away from a hospital situation. It is a real jewel in the crown. There are 4 weeks set aside each year for families that have lost a child.
