I am very excited to have been chosen to be part of ‘Team Zermatt to Verbier March 2022’ raising money for two brilliant, yet under recognised charities – The Intensive Care Society (ICS) and Doctors in Distress. The challenge has been funded by our major sponsor and the participants so all funds raised will go directly to the two charities.

This is not a ski holiday! This is 57.5Km ski mountaineering challenge with 4,000m of uphill and not a ski lift in sight. It follows the route of the gnarly Swiss Army 'Patrouille des Glaciers' at altitudes of 13,000ft. It’s going to mean a lot of training for me this winter what ever the weather!

As a Consultant in Intensive Care I am lucky to work amongst a fantastic team who are passionate about caring for the sickest patients and supporting their families. Intensive care staff are resilient, positive, hardworking people who pull together to look after patients and each other, but the unprecedented strains of the pandemic are taking their toll. Donations to The Intensive Care Society (ICS) and Doctors in Distress will provide  support to these teams in their work.

The Intensive Care Society  This is the main charity that supports intensive care.  It facilitates research, sets standards, provides educational materials and looks after the wellbeing of the multidisciplinary team (MDT)–nurses, doctors, and allied healthcare professionals. This work enables the intensive care community to provide the highest standards of care, for example it facilitated the UK to be at the leading edge of research and treatments for COVID-19.

Doctors in Distress  Despite its name, is in fact a multidisciplinary charity caring for the full range of medical staff. You may not know that sadly medical staff are 2 to 5 times more likely than the general population to take their own lives. The last year has of course only added to this. The ICS has been working with Doctors in Distress to provide support groups to healthcare workers.
