Story

This June, I’m taking on the 60 Miles in June challenge for Diabetes UK. Except, to make it a bit more challenging - I'm going 60-in-6. 60 miles in 6 days, during Diabetes Week (9th - 15th June).

That's 10 miles/16km - about 22,000 steps - a day. For someone who lives as sedentary a lifestyle as I do, that's tough!

Why? Because living with diabetes is relentless. It’s not something you manage just once a day, or only when it’s convenient. It’s constant — and this challenge is my way of showing solidarity with everyone facing that reality every single day.

I know firsthand the mental and physical toll that diabetes has. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes about 3 years ago. Finger pricks, insulin injections, carb counting, unexpected hypos, and late night glucose alerts just as you're about to dose off. And that's just a fraction of what a diabetic deals with day-to-day, all while trying to live a normal life. There’s no break, no “off switch.”

Rather than spread the distance across a month, I’ve chosen to push myself harder, compressing the full 60-mile goal into just 6 days. It’s going to be tough. It’ll take planning, early starts, sore legs, and sheer determination — but that’s the point. It’s a small way to reflect the ongoing challenges that people with diabetes face throughout their lives.

I’m doing this to raise awareness, to start conversations, and most importantly, to support the work of — helping fund research, provide support, and fight for better care for people with diabetes.

Every donation, no matter how small, is a step closer to a better future.

Thanks for reading — and thank you very much for your support. Let’s make all 60 miles count!
