I'm running the 10k to raise money for the Alzheimers Society in honour of my grandma, Mary Kirkland. She was a fierce Scotswoman to the bone and the inspiration for the Mike Myers "if its not Scottish, its crap!" character. A war bride, married at 18, who travelled from the UK to Canada on a ship with the promise from her new husband of land, wealth, excitement, family and lots of laughter. The first 2 were a lie, but the remaining 3 came in abundance! She instilled a passion for the UK in me, introduced me to travel, and taught me to stop and smell the roses (or crush lavender in her hands for me to smell). Money raised will go towards research to find a cure and money to support families to care for those suffering from this disease. My uncle Stuart did a remarkable job providing 24hr care and keeping Grandma in her own home to the end. Grandma's beloved older sister, Betty is still fighting this disease.
